A scented candle is prepared by mixing fragrant oils with wax, thereby giving off a pleasant aroma upon burning. If you want to learn how to make scented candles at home, here’s something useful for you. This article will give you detailed step-by-step information about making handmade scented candles infused with natural flavors.

  • Choose the right container for your candle

Choosing the right container for your candle is crucial to come out with the most unique candle. Make sure to choose any glass vessel, ceramic, or metal containers because they are the best heat-proof materials. You can choose any type of container, such as a mug, bowl, cup, jar, etc.

Once you select the container, perform a heat-proof test. All you need to do is fill the container with hot boiling water and leave it as is for a couple of minutes. Then, remove the hot water from the container and fill it with cold water. Check if your container has any cracks. If yes, you will have to choose another one for your candle.

  • Wax melting

Soy wax flakes are considered ideal for beginners. You can also use beeswax. Beeswax offers a natural honey aroma, but it will not hold other fragrances as well as soy wax does. Do not use paraffin wax because it is composed of petroleum and is toxic.

Using your container as a measuring cup, add two cups of wax to a double boiler and start heating it. Make sure to place a thermometer containing wax in the boiler. Allow the temperature to reach 185 F.

  • Add Essential Oils

The right time to add essential or fragrance oils is when the temperature of the wax reaches 185 F. The ideal procedure to add these oils is to take 2 teaspoons of it for every 110g. Stir the oil and melted wax together after pouring the essential oil into the melted wax. You can also add a few drops (3-4) of candle dye to give a different color to your candle. If you are using commercial essential oils for your candle, please note that you should add only 30mL for every 450 gms of wax.

  • Attach and position the wick in the candle container

Take a wick that is longer than the height of your container and place the metal end of the wick exactly in the bottom of the container. Press it tightly so that it stays in its position. You can also place a chopstick or popsicle stick on both sides of the wick so that that wick doesn't fall. If the diameter of your candle container is more than 8.9 cm, you may have to use multiple wicks.

  • Add the wax to the candle container

Now that your candle container is ready with wick, it's time for you to pour melted wax into it. Before doing so, make sure the temperature has come down to 135 °F. Do it steadily and slowly. You can also add natural-scented ingredients such as cinnamon sticks, cloves, dried flowers, etc. Once you add wax to your candle container, allow it to solidify and harden. Leave it as such for 24 hours and ensure that no air bubbles are formed.

  • Trim the wick

Once the wax is solidified, trim the wick to reduce its size with the help of scissors. You can also use wick trimmers that are specially made to trim candle wicks. Your homemade scented candle is all set. You can light up your new creation and set up a cozy mood at your sweet home!
