Celebrating International Men’s Day: Recognizing the Positive Impact of Men in Our Lives - Brown Living™

Women’s Day is meant to honour and respect women. Yet, awareness about International Men’s Day is not so high. Some do not even know that ‘International Men’s Day’ exists. Men’s rights are not as widely promoted and talked about as women’s, which is why such ignorance is not shocking.

So, this International Men’s Day, let us focus on our men and recognise their importance in our lives.

International Men’s Day: Goals and Objectives

This day, proposed by Dr. Jerome Teelucksingh, came into the picture in 1999. Established to motivate men and respect their key accomplishments, International Men’s Day also aims to address global-level level challenges against men and boys.

As brothers, fathers, or sons, men persistently work for the betterment of their families. As doctors and soldiers, they work for the welfare of people in general. Hence, International Men's Day, dedicated to men, conveys our gratitude and acknowledges their sacrifices. This is also the perfect time to consider thoughtful, sustainable gifts for men, that honour their contributions while supporting a more eco-friendly world.

  • Gender discrimination does not just affect women and their professional progress. It has similar effects on men. International Men’s Day aspires to eliminate gender inequality that pulls men down.
  • Statistics say that men make up 75% of all suicides. Thus, the mental health issues that men experience have also become a concern. International Men’s Day aims to increase awareness about the same.
  • Motivation is essential for development. On this day, men all over the world are honoured for their positive contributions in different fields and platforms. Such acknowledgement ensures our future generations witness empathetic and talented male role models.
  • People are oblivious to other problems that men face. Crucial issues that need immediate attention on a large scale involve violence against men, educational barriers, plummeting physical health, shorter life expectancy, and father’s rights.

The Role of Men

Today, men are increasingly handling unconventional responsibilities and stepping into non-traditional roles. Men play crucial roles in advocating against gender inequality and discrimination. As fathers or sons, they collaborate with female leaders to create a safer society for women to thrive in. Men’s contribution to society, whether through leadership or as role models, deserves recognition, and giving sustainable gifts to men is a meaningful way to appreciate their efforts.

  • Men play crucial roles in advocating against gender inequality and discrimination. As fathers or sons, they collaborate with female leaders to create a safer society for women to live and thrive. Unlike in the old times, men are increasingly voting for the development and upliftment of women in various streams of life.

  • Men lead several leadership programmes in India. Be it in the terrain of politics, medicine or business, men play key roles in boosting economy and prosperity. By celebrating their contributions in such spheres on a global scale, we not only recognise the milestones that have been achieved so far but also encourage deserving others to shape the trajectory of our lives.

  • Men as fathers or mentors can create a massive positive impact on people. Children raised under the guidance of their fathers have fewer emotional traumas and challenges to deal with. Such kids grow up to become more intellectually capable and efficient. As mentors, men train countless leaders who later take on huge responsibilities. Male coaches and trainers can alter personalities and craft them for the better.

Initiatives adopted on International Men’s Day

Recently, several initiatives and activities have been launched on International Men’s Day to underscore the importance and role of men in our lives. Some such initiatives include campaigns and conferences conducted globally in institutions and workplaces to discuss mental and physical health challenges that men encounter. Such initiatives also motivate men to find assistance whenever needed.

Furthermore, award functions are held to honour men who make sacrifices for their people and society. At workplaces, speeches are delivered to make the employees aware of the ideals of gender equality and gender rights.

Managing stereotypes and prejudices

A lesser-known challenge that needs special attention is the different types of stereotypes men often face. Whether they are queer or black, the diversity among men needs to be respected. Men of varying sexualities and backgrounds deserve equal levels of respect. What a man is supposed to be can only be defined by the man, not society. It is time to respect their choices.

Conclusion

Men get crushed under societal expectations. These expectations compel them to conform to traditional masculinity. Against this backdrop, we should do everything in our power to promote open discussions and encourage positive masculinity where they can openly embrace their vulnerabilities and express themselves without fear of being judged.
