Product Information

The word ‘Jamdani’ is of Persian origin, derived from 'Jam' (meaning flower) and 'Dani' (meaning vase). .

Jamdani is the richest hand weaving technique in the world. Each motif has to be inlaid into the fabric by adding denser threads to fine warp threads, and this process is so time intensive that on a usual day, an artisan can weave only between a quarter and one inch of fabric. That shockingly translates to a year if we're looking at a handwoven Jamdani fabric. The traditional art of weaving, Jamdani was declared a UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity in 2013.

Jamdani weaver Subir Biswas is a national heritage and is preserving the heritage loom. The Jamdani weave form has enormous potential to make our traditional fabrics and design gain global appeal. Subir works with fellow weavers and in recent years has discovered that it is the only weaving technique that is dying and needs to be resuscitated. His handlooms enjoy a prominent place in the heritage loom as the most rich , diverse and intricate with finesse in quality designs with eco-friendly weaves. As we move into an age of eco-friendliness, Subir has been instrumental in preserving these ancient traditions for the past 10 years in Shantipur, West Bengal.
