About Zikrr

Zikrr - Brown Living™

Zikrr was born from memory, of childhood moments spent with my grandfather, who wore ittar like a quiet signature. Growing up in Lucknow, the city of Nawabs, fragrance wasn’t just something you wore - it was in fact, a part of who you were. Over time, synthetic perfumes replaced tradition, and the soul of scent began to fade. Zikrr is my effort to bring it back. We create handcrafted, alcohol-free ittars using age-old techniques and natural ingredients blending heritage with modernity. Our mission is to revive this ancient art and take it to the world. We are building Zikrr into the Byredo of India, rooted in memory, made for now. - Dea Srivastava

Mission Statement

Reviving India’s ittar heritage through mindful fragrances rooted in memory, nostalgia and craft.

Impact Created

Zikrr is creating impact by reviving India’s centuries-old ittar-making tradition and supporting local artisans in Lucknow who practice the craft using natural, sustainable methods. Our alcohol-free, skin-safe fragrances promote conscious beauty while offering an alternative to synthetic, mass-produced perfumes. As a women-led brand, we champion inclusive storytelling, mindful marketing, and ethical production. With every ittar, we’re not only preserving a fading cultural legacy but also reintroducing it to a new generation of consumers who value depth, authenticity, and emotion. Our products encourage slower living, personal rituals, and a deeper connection to self, heritage, and environment.

What is the manufacturing process?

Zikrr’s ittars are handcrafted in Kannauj and Lucknow using the age-old deg-bhapka (hydro-distillation) method passed down through generations. Natural ingredients like flowers, herbs, woods, and spices are gently boiled in copper cauldrons (degs), and the fragrant steam is funnelled into a receiver (bhapka) containing a base oil like sandalwood. This slow process, overseen by skilled attarwallas, allows the oil to absorb the pure essence of the ingredients, without using any alcohol or synthetic additives. Once distilled, the ittar is aged. The result is a fragrance that’s clean, long-lasting, and deeply rooted in Indian tradition

What are the ingredients/materials you use?

We use natural, plant-based ingredients such as rose, jasmine, kewda, vetiver (khus), saffron, cardamom, patchouli, labdanum, and agarwood. These are combined with a pure base oil, typically sandalwood or jojoba to carry and preserve the fragrance.

How do you source your raw materials/ ingredients?

We work directly with artisanal distillers and local farmers in and around Kannauj and Lucknow, where traditional ittar-making thrives. Many of our flowers, herbs, and woods are sustainably harvested, and we prioritize small-scale suppliers who use ethical, time-honored techniques. Our relationships are built on trust, shared values, and a commitment to preserving India’s perfumery heritage.

During its life and beyond, can your products be repurposed or composted at home?

Yes. Our ittar bottles are designed for reusability and mindful disposal. Once empty, the glass vials can be repurposed for storing oils or travel fragrances. Our outer packaging uses minimal, recyclable materials, and we are moving toward compostable fillers and labels. We have a tin box that can be used to store items at home.
