What is the manufacturing process?

Banana fiber products for SPARO are made from banana stems collected after harvest, which are otherwise agricultural waste. The outer layers of the stem are processed to extract long natural fibers, either manually or using mechanical decortication. These fibers are then washed to remove sap and impurities, followed by sun or air drying. Once dried, they are sorted based on quality and length, and then softened, combed, or spun into usable strands. Skilled artisans then handcraft the material through weaving, braiding, knotting, or stitching to form the desired product structure. The items are shaped, reinforced where needed, and finished with trimming and quality checks to ensure durability and consistency. Finally, each product is inspected and packed using sustainable packaging before dispatch. This process transforms agricultural residue into functional, biodegradable products while supporting artisan livelihoods and reducing environmental impact.

What are the ingredients/materials you use?

SPARO products are made using a range of natural, plant-based fibers including banana fiber, jute, water hyacinth, sisal, raffia and others, chosen based on the required strength, texture, and application. These fibers may be used individually or blended to achieve better durability and finish quality while keeping the material fully biodegradable. In some cases, cotton or recycled cotton fibers are also used for stitching, binding, or detailing. All materials are selected to work within low-impact, handcraft-based processes, avoiding plastics, synthetic foams, and petrochemical-based composites. The focus is on using renewable agricultural or plant waste fibers that can be naturally processed, shaped, and finished while maintaining structural integrity and an eco-friendly lifecycle.

How do you source your raw materials/ ingredients?

Raw materials are sourced directly from partners and agricultural communities across regions such as Tamil Nadu, West Bengal, and other parts of India where these natural fibers are abundantly available. We work closely with farmers and local aggregators to collect plant-based residues like banana stems, water hyacinth, and other fiber-bearing biomass at the post-harvest or post-cleanup stage. This direct sourcing model helps ensure freshness and traceability of materials while also creating an additional income stream for farming communities by monetizing what is typically treated as agricultural waste. The procurement process is built around seasonal availability, local processing clusters, and sustainable harvesting practices to minimize environmental impact and maintain a consistent supply of high-quality natural fibers.

During its life and beyond, can your products be repurposed or composted at home?

SPARO products are designed for circular use across their lifecycle. During use, they are built to last with durable natural fibers, making them suitable for everyday functional and decorative purposes. After extended use, they can be repurposed for alternate home applications such as storage, organizing, gardening use, or secondary utility items depending on the product form. At end of life, because they are made entirely from natural, plant-based fibers with minimal or no synthetic additives, they are biodegradable and can be composted at home under the right conditions. They break down naturally over time and return to the soil without leaving toxic residues, completing a low-impact, circular lifecycle from material to disposal.
