Shyama Kusha Aasan - Brown Living™

Shyama Kusha Aasan

We are a brand dedicated to crafting Kusha Aasans for Puja, Jap, Meditation, and Yoga in India — a tradition rooted in the nation’s rich heritage and wisdom from deep ancient texts. Revered in the Bhagwat Geeta (Chapter 6, Verse 11), Kusha grass is described as the most authentic and sacred grass for Pujan, Jap, and Dhyan, symbolizing purity, focus, and spiritual elevation. Our mission goes beyond preserving this timeless tradition — we are empowering over 100 families in the holy city of Kashi, enabling them to create these aasans and build a better livelihood, while keeping the ancient spiritual legacy alive.

What is the manufacturing process?

Our process begins in the sacred lands of Kashi, where Kusha grass is carefully hand-cut to preserve its purity. The grass is then gently cleaned with water to remove any impurities while retaining its natural sanctity. We pair it with natural wool, which is dyed using safe, eco-friendly methods to achieve rich, lasting colors. Finally, using a traditional handloom weaving technique, the Kusha is skillfully placed and interwoven, creating a durable, spiritually authentic aasan that embodies both craftsmanship and heritage.

What are the ingredients/materials you use?

Materials We Use Kusha Grass (Desmostachya bipinnata) – Ethically harvested from the sacred lands of Kashi, as prescribed in ancient texts. Natural Wool – Soft, durable, and comfortable for long hours of meditation and jap. Eco-Friendly Dyes – Safe, non-toxic dyes used to color the wool without harming the environment. Cotton Thread – For sturdy, handloom weaving that ensures strength and longevity.

How do you source your raw materials/ ingredients?

We ethically source Kusha grass directly from the sacred riverbanks and fields of Kashi from our own land , ensuring it is harvested at the right stage for maximum spiritual and natural potency. Our natural wool comes from trusted rural suppliers who follow humane shearing practices.

During its life and beyond, can your products be repurposed or composted at home?

Yes — our Kusha Aasans are designed to be fully biodegradable and environmentally safe. Made from natural Kusha grass, wool, cotton thread, and eco-friendly dyes, they can be: Repurposed – Used as a sacred base for home puja altars, meditation corners, or as a natural mat for plants. Composted at Home – Once worn out, the materials can be cut into smaller pieces and added to a compost pile, returning their nutrients to the soil. Ritually Immersed – For those who wish to follow traditional practice, the aasan can be respectfully immersed in clean water or left in nature to decompose naturally, aligning with Hindu rituals. This makes your product not only spiritually authentic but also zero-waste and earth-friendly. I can also create a “Sustainability Promise” label that communicates this beautifully for packaging or social media.
