About Just One

Just One began with one mother and one bottle. When Dr. Shailee Swarup's daughter Naina was three months old, Shailee went looking for a scalp and hair oil she could trust on an infant's skin. The market offered complications or harsh chemistry, often both, and very little honest middle ground. So she did what her own grandmother would have done. She prepared one bottle at home, by hand, using a traditional Indian method and ingredients she could name. What she made for her daughter turned out to be what most women had been looking for, too. That is the entire brand. One handmade, 100% natural scalp-and-hair oil. No parabens, no SLS, no silicones, no mineral oil, no synthetic preservatives. Prepared the way it has always been prepared, kept honest with current research. Our goal is simple. Show that self-care does not need ten products and a translation guide. Nothing is broken. What is the manufacturing process?

Just One is handmade in small batches using a traditional ancient Indian preparation method, a three-phase controlled heat process used to infuse herbs into oil. The process begins with a fresh herbal decoction and selected base oils. The decoction is combined with the oil and cooked through three distinct phases of decreasing moisture and increasing temperature, each phase tested by traditional sensory checks before moving to the next. This slow infusion is what carries the active properties of the herbs into the oil without the use of solvents, chemical extraction, or industrial shortcuts. Each batch is monitored by hand from start to finish. Nothing is mass-produced. Nothing is preserved with synthetic preservatives. Once cooled and strained, the oil is filled into dispenser bottles for use. The same preparation method has been used in Indian households for generations, kept honest with current quality controls.

How do you source your raw materials/ ingredients?

Ingredients are sourced from trusted Indian growers and aggregators with traceability back to the region of cultivation. Natural ingredients are procured primarily from established sources, with each batch verified for identity and freshness before it enters production. Base oils are cold-pressed and sourced from small-scale oil spellers in Hyderabad, not industrial refiners. We prioritise vendors who deal directly with suppliers rather than those with long supply chains, both to reduce cost layers and to maintain tight traceability. Every incoming batch is sample-checked for colour, odour, moisture and contaminants before being released to production. Suppliers who fail repeat checks are dropped. We do not buy on price alone; consistency of plant material is the larger filter.

During its life and beyond, can your products be repurposed or composted at home?

Yes. Just One is designed with end-of-life in mind. The oil itself is 100% plant-derived and biodegradable. Any residual oil in the bottle at end of use can be applied to wooden cutting boards, leather conditioning, or simply rinsed with warm soapy water — no harsh runoff enters the water system. The outer paperboard carton is fully home-compostable. Tear it into small pieces, add to a home compost bin or wet waste, and it breaks down within weeks. The glass bottle is recyclable through Indian municipal recycling streams. We recommend rinsing once with warm water before placing it in dry waste for pickup. The dropper or pump mechanism, which combines plastic and a teat / a small metal spring, can be separated at the recycling stage. We are actively evaluating a sustainable pilot to replace plastic pump systems and dropper sleeves in future batches, reducing plastic dependency to ZERO.
